The general atheist meaning of life

i have posted this on another forum where i mentor on spirituality and i am posting here again.. when things like spirituality are no longer present in one's life, they may or may not stop looking for meaning.

meaning is an essential part of human psychology, though some feel the need for it less than others, and even a few seemingly don't at all.

there also seems to be a trend that occurs: in the lack of a meaning of life, the brain tries to find one, because it sees a purpose for everything.. .

A hypothetical society filled with people similar to the one you describe (one who adheres to no moral code or philosophy other than survival and satisfaction of his 'gut'), would be literal case of "he who has the most power makes the rules and decides what is right and what is wrong." People would be held in check mainly through fear of negative consequences carried out by more powerful men. They would obey the rules simply because they get more advantage out of obeying them than disobeying them.

The best literary examples that Teary can think of would be:

"The Sea Wolf" by Jack London

and

"The Abolition of Man" by C.S. Lewis.

both really good reads.

World Ends on a Monday- Should I Go To Work?

Well it depends on exactly when on Monday the world is going to end. If it is going to end later in the day, maybe you could work in the morning and just take the afternoon off? :/

Teary has to dispute those numbers that you give. I don't think that the DBS movement ever had anywhere near the numbers (or significance) you claim.

"Pocket Dictionary of North American Denominations 2004 p79 ed. Drew Blankman, Todd Augustine 'A smaller group rejected Rutherford's leadership and became the Dawn Bible Student's Association and in the late 1980s had a membership of about 60000.'"

Are you wanting people here to start picking out addresses, then firebomb, vandalize, harrass and mail spam them? Because honestly those are the only possible reasons Teary can think of for giving out such detailed information on such an anti-Witness site.

My friend belongs to them now

a friend of mine was born in to this damn religion and managed to avoid getting baptised for 24 years, unlike me who fell for the cruel scam when i was about 15. he is my best and pretty much only friend i have.

i used to pressure him into baptism just a bit when i was a mindless drone, but he always told me he doesn't feel ready and doesn't feel a strong enough love for jehovah to take that step.

all his friends and family were getting baptised during their teenage years but somehow, he managed to avoid the peer pressure and continued to stay neutral.

You don't sound like a very good friend, what with you talking him down behind his back, questioning all his motives and decisions, insulting him and his personal beliefs, ect. What do you think his reaction would be if he could read what you wrote about him on this thread?

Is the "Watchtower Study" = Question and answer a form of brainwashing??

on sundays study we were always told to keep answers brief and from the paragraph as some brothers would add "other meterial" to their comments.

the "correct" answer is right there in the paragraph.

read question --------find answer in paragraph------underline/highlight------read related {not] scripture-----raise hand---give answer from paragraph as though it's your own thought.

Oh dear, well if that is what is considered brainwashing these days, then Teary really must have no hope in school, considering that most of his teachers teach in a similar manner.

The Land Law II instructor in particular, mainly assigns the study guide questions that go along with the book, wherein the student takes in the question, reads the textbook chapter, and then finds/highlights the answer from the material in that chapter. Truly that professor is a far, far more evil man than Teary ever realized

p.s., brainwashing theories lost all serious consideration clear back in the 80's. Even the American Psychological Association calls it junk science.

Interesting notes so far:

There are apparently two different #14 tracts (as in completely different material), and one of those #14's is the exact same tract, word-for-word, as the later #27 tract from 1895.

The "Dark Cloud and Its Silver Lining" tract is officially listed as #14 in the list from the #25 tract though, even though #27 is also "Dark Cloud and Its Silver Lining." But then, the list switches in the later tracts, and #27 officially becomes "Dark Cloud."
